Description

Athelstan Hall is a house that now serves as a Technical College Annexe and offices. It was built in the mid-19th century and features dressed stone with a hipped Welsh slate roof and various dressed stone stacks with ashlar detailing.

The building has two storeys and a cellar, with a three-window range consisting of 2/2 sash windows that have cambered heads in moulded stone architraves. The eaves are supported by stone brackets. The central entrance is marked by a portico that includes an entablature and balustrade, supported by plain and fluted columns. The entrance features a six-fielded panel door with a blocked overlight, flanked by 2/2 sash windows that have moulded hoods on scrolled consoles. The exterior is finished with quoins and a moulded plinth.

On the right side of the building, there are three 2/2 sash windows, along with a sash window and a canted bay with casement windows. The left side features additional 2/2 sash windows and a stucco service wing. At the rear, there is another central entrance with six fielded panel double doors and sidelights, along with a tripartite window that has a combination of 1/1, 2/2, and 1/1 sashes, flanked by more 2/2 sash windows.

Inside, the hall features a stone dogleg staircase with cast-iron balusters and a moulded rail, as well as a winder stair at the rear with stick and turned balusters. The attic also has a winder stair. On the first floor, there are four-panel doors with architraves, ceiling cornices, beaded arches, tiled utilities, slate fireplaces, a wood fireplace, skirtings, a marble fireplace, radiators, and architraves around the windows. The ground floor includes tiled utilities, four-panel doors with architraves, a 20th-century wood fireplace, cornices, friezes, ceiling roses, marble fireplaces, a panelled arch to the bay, alcoves, picture rails, and a coloured glass screen with double doors leading to the hall. The cellar contains a six-panel door, two four-panel doors, plank doors, brick floors, and stone and brick-lined vaults.
