Description

Churchill Gardens Museum is a mid-19th century house that has been converted into a museum. The building is constructed of stucco and features a hipped Welsh slate roof, along with two stucco stacks that have moulded caps.

The exterior is two storeys high, with an attic and cellar, and has a three-window range that includes 6/6 sash windows, with the central window set in a recessed bay. The windows are framed by shouldered moulded architraves and sill bands. The eaves are moulded and modillioned, and there is a box dormer with a 6/6 sash window.

The central entrance consists of a porch with four-panel double doors and a margin-glazed fanlight, all set under a circular arch with a drip course. Above the entrance, there is a band, cornice, and parapet. To the left of the entrance, there is a 6/6 sash window in a shouldered architrave, flanked by two 4/4 sashes. To the right, there is a 6/6 sash window in an advanced bay with canted returns, along with a shouldered architrave.

On the right side of the building, there are three 6/6 sash windows with louvred shutters, shouldered architraves, and a sill band. The central section features French windows with an overlight, flanked by 6/6 sashes with shutters, all under moulded architraves and canopied flat hoods supported by scrolled consoles.

An advanced painted brick wing is located to the left, which has three 6/6 sash windows under cambered arches, moulded and bracketed eaves, and two brick stacks with moulded caps. The ground floor includes 4/4 and 6/6 sash windows. The left side of the building has a roof that breaks forward over a canted bay, which features 4/4, 6/6, and 4/4 sash windows.

Inside, the museum features an open-well staircase with moulded stick balusters and a rail, along with an alcove on the landing. The first floor includes ceiling cornices, 6-panel doors with architraves, architraves for the windows, three wood fireplaces, a four-panel door, and an overlight. The ground floor has a margin-glazed door leading to the hall, ceiling cornices, fireplaces, four-panel and five-panel doors, architraves, and a plank door. The cellar has flagstone floors and is brick-lined.
