Description

Elmhurst is a house that has been converted into a Social Services Centre. It was built in the mid-19th century and features a stucco exterior with a graduated Welsh slate roof that has a hipped gable and a mansard wing. The building has two storeys and a cellar, with a four-window range that includes three margin-glazed casements set in moulded cases with square-headed splayed reveals, and a similar casement featuring a Gothick glazed head under a four-centred arch. The eaves are moulded, and there are canted bay windows on the advanced bays, which have margin-glazed French windows and lights, along with coloured leaded clerestory lights.

The ground floor also has margin-glazed French windows and overlights beneath a cast-iron verandah with a lead roof supported by enriched columns. On the left side of the building, there is an entrance porch with half-glazed double doors under a four-centred arch and a parapet. To the right, there is a canted bay with margin-glazed French windows and an overlight, along with two 2-light casements above. The left wing has margin-glazed casements.

Inside, the building features an open well staircase with turned balusters and a moulded rail, along with a staircase light. On the first floor, there are six-panel doors with architraves, skirting, panelled shutters, a coved ceiling, and picture and dado rails. The ground floor includes six-panel doors with panelled reveals and architraves, a lined arch leading to the staircase hall, and a hall opening with brackets, marble pillars, panelling, and a screen with an arched wood cornice on fluted posts. The fireplace has a corniced hood on fluted pillars and a marble surround, with friezes, ceiling cornices, and roses, as well as picture and dado rails. The kitchen has mutilated cornices, and there are beaded returns to the arches. The cellar features a four-panel door, stone lining, flagstone floors, a plank door, and wine bins.
