Description
Laurel Cottage is a Grade II listed building located in Hope Under Dinmore. It is likely from the early 17th century, with extensions made in the mid-18th century and further alterations in the mid-19th century. The cottage was restored in the late 20th century. The structure is part timber-framed with rendered infill and part sandstone rubble, topped with a plain tiled roof. Originally, it consisted of two framed bays running north to south, featuring a large external rubble chimney and a brick stack at the southern end. The cottage was extended by two bays at the northern end in the 18th century. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.
The original part of the building has two rows of rectangular panels from the sill to the wall-plate, while the north bay of the 18th-century extension has one row of square panels at eaves level and a queen post truss at the north gable end. The east front elevation features three 2-light casements and a single-light casement in a former blocked doorway on the ground floor. The 18th-century part includes a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement and a square stair light at eaves level. The main entrance is at the north end, enclosed by a 20th-century flat-roofed porch addition, with an attic light also at the north end. A 20th-century wing has been added to the rear of the original part.
Inside, the roof of the original section has a collar and tie-beam truss with two main struts and raking struts across the lower corners at the northern end. The intermediate truss and the purlins have been altered, and there is a large fireplace in the southern bay.
