Description

Spring Cottage is a Grade II listed building located in Ashford Bowdler. Originally built around 1583, it combines two houses, now functioning as one, with a 17th-century extension. The structure features a timber frame with painted brick infill set on a stone rubble plinth, topped with a thatched roof. A stone stepped gable-end stack with a brick upper shaft and a stepped brick chimney at the rear are notable features.

The cottage is a single storey with an attic and has a garden-facing front that consists of three bays. The west bay contains a 2-light casement window, the central bay has a 4-light casement, and the right bay features 20th-century casements. There are two attic windows, both 4-light casements, located under eyebrow eaves in the central and right bays. A 20th-century door is situated in the left bay.

The gable-end return on the right displays the end truss with a straight tie beam, collar, and twin vertical struts. Below this, there is square framing with straight braces, a girding beam, posts with a middle rail, studs, and a sill plate. A 19th-century 2-light casement window is found to the right. The rear extension bay has square framing with three panels high on a high plinth. The rear side features square framing partially obscured by a brick chimney, two 20th-century doors, and a 2-light casement window to the right. There is also a flat-roofed dormer that projects through the thatch.

Inside, the cottage has a single trenched purlin roof. The end truss on the west side features twin struts and a collar. The bridging beams are chamfered with ogee chamfers in the east bay, while the central bay has plain bridging beams.
