Description
Hope Cottage is a house that was formerly divided into two tenements. It dates from the 17th century, was extended probably in the early 18th century, and was restored in the late 20th century. The building is timber-framed with rendered infill on a rubble base, featuring some painted brick replacement walling and some sandstone rubble walling, all topped with slate roofs. The structure is L-shaped, with the original part consisting of two framed bays aligned north to south. This section has a large external rubble chimney with stone-tiled offsets and a brick stack located on the west side of the north bay.
The extension added two framed bays to the east side of the south bay, which includes an external rubble chimney with a rebuilt brick stack and a lean-to bread oven on the north side. The house is mainly two storeys high. The original part features three panels from the sill to the wall-plate and collar and tie-beam trusses with three struts at each end. The later part has two rows of panels at the first floor level, short straight braces across the upper corners, and a tie-beam truss with lattice struts at the east end.
On the east front elevation, the windows are 20th-century casements. The original part has a two-light ground floor window and a gabled half-dormer with a two-light window in the north bay. The gable end of the east wing features a ground and first floor three-light window. In the angle of the building are two first floor single-light windows, along with a single-storey lean-to that has a single-light window at the east end. At the western end, there is a 20th-century porch with a single-light window and a 20th-century door. Additionally, there is a timber-framed lean-to outshut on the west side of the south bay of the original part. Inside, the cottage has some stop-chamfered ceiling beams and a large fireplace associated with the west chimney.
