Description
This is an outbuilding, possibly a stable and granary, located about two yards north-east of Brownsland Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century and has mid-19th century alterations. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill on a rubble base, and it is partly weatherboarded with a stone slate roof laid in diminishing courses. The building has four framed bays aligned east to west and consists of two levels. The framing features three rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate, a collar and tie-beam truss with three struts below the collar, and a V-strut in the apex exposed at the west end.
On the main south elevation, the ground floor has two square openings and one pair of square openings, while the upper floor has three pairs of square openings. There are two ledged and battened doors located in the first and second bays from the west end, along with a small doorway inserted in the fourth bay. A continuous lean-to rubble outshut adjoins the north elevation. The interior is noted to include some early 16th century moulded beams.
