Description

Brownsland Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the early 17th century, with extensions from the late 17th century and mid-18th century, along with further alterations in the mid-19th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered infill on a rubble base, featuring some sandstone rubble walling and a machine-tiled roof with a brick ridge stack. The building consists of two plus one framed bays aligned north to south, with a continuous lean-to outshut at the rear and an external rubble chimney with offsets and two brick stacks at the south end. There is also a single-bay 18th-century rubble addition at the north end. The farmhouse is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The framing includes three rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and there is a tie-beam truss at the south gable end with one visible raking strut. The east front elevation features ground floor windows that are 19th-century casements with plank weatherings, including a 4-light window, a 3-light window, and a single-light window beneath a continuous weathering, as well as a 2-light window. Above these, there is a 2-light window at eaves level and a gabled half-dormer with a 2-light casement in the late 17th-century part, along with two large gabled dormers with 2-light casements and plank weatherings in the early 17th-century part. The main entrance, located in the earlier section, has a lean-to slate porch on shaped brackets and a 19th-century ledged and battened door, as well as a half-glazed door in the later part. The 18th-century addition at the north end is two storeys high and features a 3-light casement on both floors.
