Description
The gate, gate piers, and flanking railings located about 100 yards east of Whitfield date from around 1860 and are made of cast iron. The gate consists of a single leaf that is cleverly designed to swing in both directions. It features several rails, with the bottom two having scrolled dog bars, while the top rail is adorned with elaborate scrolls and finials. The gate piers are square in shape and include open-work panels along with solid finials. The railings carry forward the gate's motifs in a simplified style; those on the south side extend about five yards at full height, while the north side has a similar design but includes an additional section that curves down to a ha-ha. This gate, along with its piers and railings, serves as an important feature in the approach to Whitfield from the east.
