Description
This description covers a pair of gate piers, a gate, and flanking railings located immediately west of the Lower Lodge, marking the entrance to a disused drive leading to Black Hall. The structures date from the late 19th century. The gate piers are square in plan and made of granite, featuring monolithic construction with chamfered corners and ogee stops with fillets. They have plain granite plinths and caps, which include convex necking and large ball finials. The flanking railings are made of cast iron with spear-head shafts, set on a granite dwarf wall. Small square granite terminal piers with caps are positioned at either end, although the right-hand section of the right-hand railings is missing. The wrought iron gate is coeval, consisting of seven bars that are closely spaced at the bottom. The stiles bend over the top rail in a scroll design, and the curved braces have scrolled ends that meet at the center.
