Description

The Shop and Bank House is a pair of attached cottages with a shop located on the Black Hall estate in North Huish, dating from around 1840 to 1845, although they are not shown on the estate map from 1840. The cottages are constructed of stone rubble and feature an asbestos slate pyramidal hipped roof with deep eaves and a rendered stack at the apex.

The original structure is square in shape, with each cottage designed as a mirror image. Each has a living room at the front and a kitchen behind, both heated by a central stack. In the late 19th century, a two-storey, one-room plan addition was made to the left-hand cottage, which houses the shop. This addition includes an outshut at the rear corner. Additionally, another outshut was added to the rear of the right-hand cottage, known as Bank House.

The exterior of the building is two storeys high with a window arrangement of 1:2. The right-hand side features two windows in the original symmetrical front, while the left-hand side has a window in the later addition. The first floor has 19th-century two-light casements with eight panes per light and wooden lintels. The ground floor showcases three canted bay windows with 19th-century casements, each with eight panes per light and topped with hipped roofs made of large slates. The left bay serves as a shop window with panelled shutters, next to a 19th-century flush panel door that has a scantle slate hipped hood above it. The right-hand return has similar casements, a 20th-century glazed porch to the right, and a 20th-century wooden garage to the left of centre. At the rear, there is a one-storey and attic outshut. The interior has not been inspected.
