Description

Hollymount House and Nos 1 and 2 Hollymount Cottages form a house and attached row of two cottages, likely dating to the 1840s. They were built on the Black Hall estate, although not depicted on the estate map of 1840. The house is constructed of roughcast stone rubble, with the first floor of the cottages having been stripped of plaster. It has an asbestos slate hipped roof, and natural slate gables at the rear. Axial stacks are rendered, as is a stack on the left-hand side of Hollymount House.

The house has a square, double-depth plan with a central entrance hall between two principal front rooms, and likely a service room behind. The cottages are attached at right angles and face a side lane. No 1 cottage has a principal room to the left and an entrance passage to the right, while No 2, at the end of the row, has two principal rooms with an entrance between, and both cottages have service rooms in an outshut behind.

The south-facing front of Hollymount House has a symmetrical three-bay design with original 19th-century 16-pane sash windows, the ground-floor windows set in round-arch recesses. A central stuccoed porch features panelled pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The 19th-century double doors are flush-panelled with margin-paned glass, and the interior doors are similarly constructed. The cottages in the rear wing are characterised by an asymmetrical three-window east-facing front, with two additional windows in the side elevation of Hollymount House. There are 12 and 16-pane sashes, 2-plank doors with 4-pane overlights, and a continuous 19th-century verandah with wooden latticework, arch braces, and a slate roof, partly replaced with corrugated iron. The interiors have not been inspected, but are likely to retain original joinery.

The property includes mid-19th-century garden area railings and a gate in front of Hollymount House. These are wrought-iron spear-headed railings with turned standards and urn finials, set on a granite ashlar garden retaining wall. The gate, located centrally, is similar in design, with posts matching the standards.
