Two Barns, One With Cow Houses And Linking Shelter Shed, About 25 Yards West Of Cothill Farmhouse

This listing describes two barns, one of which includes cow houses and a linking shelter shed, located about 25 yards west of Cothill Farmhouse. The buildings date from the early to mid-19th century and consist of a threshing barn, hay barn, shelter shed, and cow houses. They are constructed from thinly coursed rubble with stone slate roofs, and part of the structure is timber-framed with weatherboards.

The barns are arranged in three parts, with two rectangular ranges that taper towards each other, and the shelter shed is at the west end. The hay barn, situated to the north, has three bays, a high rubble plinth, and weatherboards over timber-framing that is two panels high. It features central full-height draft doors, two catslide extensions to the north, slit vents in the stone gable ends, and stone straight hoods over the gable end openings. Inside, there are three rows of purlins, a board ridge, and thin raking struts supporting the trusses.

The shelter shed has six open bays supported by oak posts on concrete bases, with braces to the plate on the east side and two large buttresses at the back. Inside the shelter shed, there are pegged king post trusses and long feeding racks.

The threshing barn and cow houses consist of three bays each, separated by masonry. The west part features full-height draft doors leading to the threshing floor, flanked by slit vents, and a pattern of slit vents is present in the west gable. The eastern end has a loft over the cow house, with two doorways that have cambered heads made of voussoirs with springers, and the loft entry is located above.
