Description
The barn and cowhouse block at Garth-fawr is a Grade II listed structure, aligned roughly east to west, with the cowhouse range positioned at right angles to the east on the south side. The barn features a timber frame, with the front and rear partially clad in corrugated sheeting, while the end walls are constructed of stone. It has large opposing threshing doorways, and the roof is a mix of partially original stone slates and corrugated sheeting.
The cowhouse range is primarily made of stone and has an open front supported by jowelled posts. Its roof and front are also covered in corrugated sheeting. The cowhouse consists of three bays facing the yard, with a further bay at the north end that connects to the barn. It has central paired doors and wooden gates leading to the outer bays.
The barn comprises five bays, featuring roof trusses with tie-beams and raking struts. The threshing floor is flanked by dwarf stone walls, with posts and raking struts supporting the cross-framing. The cowhouse has roof trusses with cambered tie-beams and raking struts, along with a complex 19th-century diagonal truss at the junction where the range meets the barn. The front facing the yard includes jowelled posts, and the interior retains wooden feeding troughs and a hay rack.
