Description

The barn and cowhouse at Pound Farm date from the early 19th century and are constructed of random rubble stone, with coursed squared stone used for the cowhouse and cartshed. The building is L-shaped and single storey. The barn, which is approached from the house, features a three-bay design with double boarded doors leading to the threshing floor at the far end, away from the road. Above the doors is a segmental head with a brick arch. To the left, there are two rows of three slit air vents, and a circular owl-hole is located in the gable on the left return, which is set on a splay to align with the road.

Inside, the barn has an open layout supported by collar and tie-beam trusses and two pairs of purlins. Attached to the gable is a hipped cartshed that has an open entrance facing the approach to the house, with a timber lintel forming the wallplate. The cowhouse, which has ten bays, is positioned at nearly right angles to the barn and adjoins the back of the cartshed. Originally, it was open-fronted to the yard adjacent to the barn, supported by square timber posts with angle struts at the wallplate. Some of the openings have since been boarded up. The cowhouse features a collar and tie-beam truss with wind-braces extending from the wallplate upwards, intersecting the rafters. The building backs onto the road, and a single-storey range extends from the barn towards the house. There is another range opposite the cowhouse, running at right angles to the barn, which is not of special interest. The cowhouse and barn are likely of the same date, with the cowhouse built from better stone due to its location along the main road. This structure is included for its group value.
