Description

The Barn and Cowhouse Range at Ty-uchaf is a 19th-century structure built into a slope, featuring a barn with a cowhouse aligned to the left. The northern elevation faces a pitched stone yard and is constructed from rubble, showing significant traces of limewash, with corrugated iron roofs. The barn has heavily battered walls and similar northern and southern elevations. It features central axial doors with timber lintels, although only the northern side partially retains its boarded doors. There are short, symmetrically arranged paired loops on each side, with the lower loops set closer together. A straight joint connects the barn to the cowhouse on the eastern side.

The northern elevation of the cowhouse consists of four bays with four doorways that step up with the rising ground, where the two central doorways are grouped closer together and have cambered stone voussoired heads. The rear of the cowhouse includes an upper loop on the left. The ground floor has a door on the left and three small windows on the right. To the west, in line with the cowhouse, is a later implement store with three bays; the upper two bays have heightened eaves and a lower roof pitch, featuring two wide openings on the northern side supported by a central brick and stone pillar.

Inside the barn, there is a stone-paved threshing floor. The roof consists of five bays, with the principal beams morticed into the tie-beams and reinforced by raking queen-posts, pegged collars, and triple purlins. Most of the trusses appear to be reused, with some being cut-down crucks. The original eastern gable of the barn is now visible from the cowhouse and features a window with a plain dripmould. The upper part of the cowhouse includes a loft supported by four massive reused beams, one of which has post-holes.
