Description
The Railed Memorial to the Protheroe family is located near the west gate of the old churchyard at Llanelly Church. This chest tomb features a large sandstone slab with a deep overhang, supported by six cast-iron colonettes that have square abaci. The slab is facetted to a central ridge and includes inscriptions on both the west and east sides.
On the west side, the memorial commemorates Mary, daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Protheroe, who died on 30th October 1854 at the age of 1 year and 6 months, and James, who died on 22nd March 1863 at the age of 9 months. The east side bears the inscription for Alice Protheroe, who died on 18th September 1878 at the age of 16 months. The slab also lists Thomas Protheroe, who died on 18th September 1882, his wife Mary Ann who died in 1883, Magdalen, wife of Llewellyn Brown, who died on 30th November 1902, and their daughter Rosamond Ann, who died on 13th April 1885.
The railings surrounding the memorial feature spear-finials and central stanchions with spike-finials, while the ball-finials at the corners are mostly missing, with only one remaining.
