Description

The group of six memorials is located in the center of the old churchyard at Llanelly Church. Each memorial features large sandstone slabs supported by four cast-iron legs. The legs are ribbed and taper from fluted feet to caps. The slabs are facetted to a central ridge, with most displaying inscriptions on all four faces, although some inscriptions are covered in lichen.

At the approximate center of the churchyard is the memorial for Elias Thomas of Clydach, who died on February 1st, 1861, at the age of 41; his wife Jane, who died on October 10th, 1867, at the age of 39; and their daughters Mary Jane Prichard, who died in 1862, and Anne Andrew, who died on July 22nd, 1861.

To the east and west of a lawned pathway, there is a similar pair of memorials. The southernmost memorial is dedicated to Sarah Emily, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Jones, who died on January 28th, 1857, at the age of 1, and to Elizabeth, her mother, who was born on December 20th, 1834, and died on July 31st, 1861. The adjacent memorial is lower and features squat moulded convex iron feet on small plinth-blocks. Its eroded top has inscriptions in Welsh for Elizabeth, the daughter of John and Jane Davies of Brynmawr, who died on September 22nd, 1858, and her father John, who died in 1875.

On the eastern side of the lawned path, immediately southeast of the previous pair, is a memorial for Mary Aubrey, who died in 1891, with earlier dates from the 1850s noted beneath a holly tree.

Approximately six metres north of this pair is the memorial for Rachel Jones, who died on July 18th, 1874, at the age of 69; her husband, John Jones, who died on July 24th, 1879, at the age of 78; and their son John. This memorial also features iron feet standing on a cast-iron base-plate.

Another six metres northeast, on the eastern side of the lawned path, is the memorial for John Reynallt of Llanelly, a pattern-maker at the Clydach Ironworks, who died in 1876 at the age of 72; this memorial also includes an inscription for his son, Joshua, and has a base similar to the others.
