Threshing barn with attached cow house at Covenhope Farm

The property comprises a 17th-century threshing barn with an attached cow house, largely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. The buildings are part of a group forming a loose courtyard plan, with the threshing barn running along the northern edge and aligned east-west. The cow house extends southwards from the western end of the barn.

The threshing barn has a timber frame set on a plinth of local rubble stone, with partial cladding of weatherboarding and modern metal sheeting. The cow house has stone walls and a timber roof structure, both buildings being mostly roofed in slate with some metal sheeting.

The southern elevation of the threshing barn is timber-clad above the stone base, featuring central timber doors. The courtyard elevation of the cow house is of stone, including two arched-headed doors with timber doors; the northern door has brick quoins. The southern door is flanked by two small openings, with a further, larger opening above, all fitted with timber boarded panels. The northern elevation of the threshing barn has large metal doors corresponding to those on the southern elevation. The western elevation of the cow house has openings at its northern end.

The interior of the threshing barn has three bays, with a central threshing floor of stone flags. The timber-framed construction is exposed, with tall panels and some diagonal bracing at the bottom, sitting on a stone plinth. Some panels retain thick wattles and staves. The framing for the roof trusses sits on low brick walls. The cow house joins the barn at its western end, with the weatherboarded gable of the barn enclosed within the cow house. The northern part of the cow house is open, with openings in the west wall. Two rooms are located at the southern end of the cow house, with attic space above. The roof of the cow house is constructed with trusses and angle struts, while the southern elevation has a square panelled wall on a stone base with angled braces at the apex.
