Description
The cowhouse, barn, and shelter sheds located to the north-west of Lower Norncott Farmhouse date back to the 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is built of brick on a stone rubble plinth, with timber-framed gables that are clad in weatherboard. The roofs are covered in corrugated iron sheets, except for the shelter shed wing, which has tile roofing.
This continuous range includes a shelter shed, cowhouse, and barn, along with an additional cross wing extension for the shelter shed. The cart shed has been converted into a shelter shed and features a single open-bay extension to the cowhouse, which has brick back and gable walls.
The cowhouse, which includes a hayloft, is a three-bay range with evenly-pierced ventilation holes in the brick walls and various boarded door and window openings. Inside, it has a double-trenched purlin roof with two west trusses that feature double collars, vertical struts, cambered tie beams, and square framing below. Some original wattle and daub, as well as oak strip wattle infill, can still be seen. The east side has double collar and twin raking-strut trusses, and there is an inserted floor supported by large bridging beams.
The barn has brick walls with evenly-pierced ventilation holes arranged in eight tiers and an open bay adjacent to the cowhouse. It features king-post trusses, but the interior has not been inspected.
The cross wing of the shelter shed, dating from the 19th century, is a four-bay range with three open bays and an enclosed loose-box at the end. It has brick back and gable walls supported by brick piers, and a single trench purlin roof with twin raking-strut trusses and swept principals. The interior of this section has also not been inspected.
