Description
The granary, located about 15 yards south of Great Moorcourt Farmhouse, is a structure that likely dates from the late 18th century. It is built of brick and features a tiled roof, with nine roofing bays arranged in an east/west alignment. The building has two storeys and three windows.
On the north elevation, there are two barred, semi-circular headed openings on the ground floor, positioned on the right side. To the left of these openings is a two-leaved, segmentally headed door that leads to the granary steps, beneath which is a dog kennel. The first floor has three openings, two of which are located to the right of the large entry from the granary steps.
The west gable includes a wide segmental opening on the ground floor, a narrow ledged door leading to the granary floor, and a 4-light window situated below the apex of the roof. Inside, the roof trusses consist of simple angle struts and collars made from substantial timber. The east part of the ground floor originally housed a cider press and mill, accessible from beneath the granary steps.
This granary is an important component of the farmyard complex at Great Moorcourt Farmhouse, which also includes a barn, cow house, and former kitchen and laundry.
