Description

The barn and byre located immediately northwest of Lower Nicholson Farmhouse is likely from the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed stone rubble and features a plain tile roof with gabled ends. The building has a three-bay design, with a central threshing bay and an integral three-bay byre at the eastern end, which includes a loft above.

On the exterior, the barn section has central double doors and two tiers of ventilation slits on either side. The byre section has three doorways with plank doors and two small windows. The loft above the byre has a weatherboarded timber-framed front with a central doorway, and there is similarly weatherboarded timber-framing at the rear, along with plank barn doors on the right. The east gable end features ventilation slits, while the west gable end has pigeon-holes.

Inside, the building has a six-bay roof with tie-beam trusses that include queen-struts and king-posts supporting high collars. The principals are halved, lapped, and crossed at the apex, with a diagonally-set ridgepiece and trenched purlins. The timber-framed front and back walls of the byre loft have jowled wall-posts and woven panels. The byre itself contains wooden troughs and mangers.
