Description

Westend Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the late 14th century, largely rebuilt around 1700, with further alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, which was previously rendered, and features some internal timber framing along with asbestos slate roofs. The main structure is a two-bay range that runs roughly east to west, with external rubble chimneys and rebuilt 19th-century brick stacks at the east end and rear west bay. There is also a single-bay range, which is lower in height at the west end, featuring an external chimney and a lean-to rubble bread oven.

The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a two-course band between the storeys of the main range. The south front elevation shows that the main range has two casements from the 19th century on both the ground and first floors, which have timber lintels. The single-bay part has a 2-light casement on both floors, with the ground floor window also having a timber lintel. The main entrance features a moulded architrave and a ledged and battened door, with attic lights in the gable ends. There is an entrance to the cellar located at the rear of the main range.

Inside, the single-bay part retains a complete cruck truss with a chamfered arch-braced collar and cusped raking struts above the collar. The main range includes a timber-framed central partition with some lath and plaster infill, as well as stop-chamfered main ceiling beams. The single-bay part has a chamfered cross-beamed ceiling and two ovens within the chimney.
