Description

Westend Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and some timber-framing with rendered infill. The roof is partly hipped and covered with plain tiles, featuring brick stacks at the rear of the main ridge and at the north end. The building has a T-plan layout, with a main range of four bays aligned roughly north to south and a four-bay cross-wing added later at the south end. It stands two storeys high with a cellar.

On the west front elevation, the main range includes a 20th-century bay window, a 19th-century tripartite sash window with a central four-pane sash on the ground floor, and a 3-light 20th-century casement window, along with a 20th-century cross-casement, 4-pane 19th-century sashes, and a 19th-century single-light casement on the first floor. The main entrance, located in the second bay from the north end, features a 20th-century half-glazed gabled porch on a rubble base with a partly-glazed door. The cross-wing has no openings on its west gable end, but at the angle with the main range, there are two 4-pane 19th-century sash windows on the ground and first floors, along with a ledged and battened door. A timber-framed single-bay outbuilding is located at the rear of the north bay of the main range; this has been altered in the 20th century and is now part of the house.

Inside, the main ceiling beams are chamfered, and an arched doorhead survives on the first floor of the main range, along with some panelled doors. Most of the internal timber-framing has been retained. There is also a small section of the original staircase featuring turned balusters and a square newel with a shaped finial in the main range.
