Description

Wainhouse, located about 60 yards west of Hellens, is a building likely dating from the 18th century. It features a timber-frame construction with weatherboarding and tiled roofs, consisting of two structural bays aligned roughly north to south. The south elevation has a gable end with a full-width entry, lean-tos on either side, a central pitching-hole, and loft openings in each lean-to, both of which have catslide roofs. The north elevation also includes an additional lean-to. The frame, designed for weatherboards, consists of two panels high from the cill to the wall-plate, with the upper panels being square and the lower ones vertical rectangles, featuring occasional diagonal struts. The trusses have central posts extending from ties to collars, above which are V-struts. This building is part of a farm group that includes nearby barns, a cider house, and a stable block, and it is included for its group value.
