Description

This is a barn located about 40 yards east of Bodenham Farmhouse, likely built in the late 17th century to early 18th century. It features a timber-frame structure with board and woven infill, a sandstone rubble plinth, and extensions topped with plain tiled roofs. The barn has three plus one bays, oriented west-south-west to east-south-east, with a two-level east bay.

The south elevation includes ledged full-height doors leading to the threshing floor in the second bay from the left, flanked by 18th-century lean-to cow cots on each side. To the right, there is a rubble wall that corresponds to the fourth bay, which connects the barn to the adjacent cider house. This section has a ledged 18th-century door, a six-barred oak mullioned window, and tallet stairs that rise at right angles from those belonging to the cider house. There is also a rubble lean-to extension on the left gable. The wall-frame consists of four panels high from the cill to the wall-plate.

Inside, the barn features trusses made of heavy scantling, with braces connecting the main posts to the ties and raking struts from the ties to the principals. Together with the nearby Bodenham Farmhouse and cider house, this barn represents an unaltered example of an 18th-century farm unit set in a picturesque location against a hillside.
