Description
This barn, located about 100 yards west-north-west of Whitfield, dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and was altered in the late 20th century. It is constructed from finely coursed sandstone rubble and has a Welsh slate roof. The barn features six structural bays that are aligned roughly east to west. The south elevation includes three rows of vent-slits and large opposed segmentally-headed cart entries to the right of center, along with a smaller opposed entry on the left side. The east gable is adorned with a lunette and a ball finial. Inside, the barn has trusses with single pegged principals and ties, with two parallel angle struts on either side of each bolted king-rod. The lintels of the vent-slits are made from re-used wall-frame timbers. There is a low extension attached to the north side of the east end, which is not of special architectural interest. This barn is an important part of the overall complex that includes stables, a cottage, gate piers, and enclosing walls associated with Whitfield. It is included for its group value.
