RUFFORD OLD RUFFORD ROAD (east side) West gate, screen wall and fence posts at Rufford Abbey

Gate, screen wall and fence posts. Mid C19. Jacobean Revival style. Probably by A. Salvin. Ashlar,cast and wrought iron. Dwarf boundary wall has chamfered coping. Piers have chamfered rustication, chamfered plinths and moulded cornices. Central pair of wrought iron gates has ornate overthrow with double 'S' monogram. Main gate piers have central round headed recesses with strapwork bands and mask keystones. Above, strapwork band. Above again, rectangular base carrying Savile Achievement with swan crest and parrot supporters. Flanked by two square piers with scroll-bracketed obelisks with ball finials. Beyond, two terminal piers with strapwork bands, half-pier responds, and concave square caps with ball finials. Dwarf boundary wall with six bays of ornate spearhead railing. Outside, two guard stones with domed tops. Twenty two tapered octagonal ashlar fence posts with iron ball finials, carrying spiked chain fence.
