Description
The west gate, screen wall, and fence posts at Rufford Abbey date from the mid-19th century and are designed in the Jacobean Revival style, likely by A. Salvin. The structure is made of ashlar stone, with cast and wrought iron elements. The dwarf boundary wall features chamfered coping, while the piers exhibit chamfered rustication, chamfered plinths, and moulded cornices. The central pair of wrought iron gates is topped with an ornate overthrow that displays a double 'S' monogram. The main gate piers have round-headed recesses adorned with strapwork bands and mask keystones, with additional strapwork above. Above this is a rectangular base that carries the Savile Achievement, featuring a swan crest and parrot supporters. The structure is flanked by two square piers topped with scroll-bracketed obelisks and ball finials. Beyond these, there are two terminal piers with strapwork bands, half-pier responds, and concave square caps also topped with ball finials. The dwarf boundary wall includes six bays of ornate spearhead railing. Outside the wall, there are two guard stones with domed tops. Additionally, there are twenty-two tapered octagonal ashlar fence posts with iron ball finials, which support a spiked chain fence.
