Description

The Major Icehouse at Rufford Abbey is an icehouse built in the mid 18th century, with alterations made in the mid 20th century. It is constructed from brick, ashlar, and coursed dressed stone, featuring a single bay and an octagonal plan. The rebuilt east front includes a pair of flanking walls and a central splayed round-headed relieving arch that contains a rebated round-headed doorway. Inside, the octagonal chamber has an ashlar top band and a vault, with an approximate diameter of 7 meters.
