Description

West Lodge at Rufford Abbey is a lodge built in 1841 in the Jacobean Revival style, likely designed by A. Salvin. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a Westmorland slate roof. It has decorative ashlar dressings, a chamfered plinth, and eaves, along with coped gables that include kneelers. The rainwater heads are adorned with strapwork decoration, and there is a grouped corniced central stack.

The lodge is a single storey plus garrets and has a cruciform plan with three bays. The windows are leaded casements that are cross and mullioned. The east front features a central projecting bay with a canted bay window, which has a moulded cornice and strapwork crest topped with ball finials, along with three casements. This is flanked by single casements that have hood moulds, and there is a single casement above. The return angle to the south has a weatherstripped door set in a moulded surround with a four-centred arched head and hood mould. The south gable includes a cross casement and above it, a datestone with a chamfered surround inscribed '1841'. The north gable is identical to the south. The rear elevation has a door in the return angle to the south and a single casement on each floor.
