SJ37NW BIRKENHEAD ROAD, Willaston 794-1/2/111 (West side) Lydiate Lodge

Lodge. c1857 with later extension. Coursed rock-faced red sandstone with ashlar plinth, quoins and dressings; slate roof with timber eaves cornice and rusticated conjoined stacks with ashlar modillion cornices. EXTERIOR: entrance front: single storey, 3 bays, with extension to left. Centre of original front projects as gabled open pedimented frontispiece with glazed and sunk panelled door in moulded surround beneath floating cornice hood on carved consoles. On each side are round-headed slit windows of 4 vertical panes. Bays flanking entrance projection have round-headed sashes, each sash divided horizontally into 2 panes, in keyed round-arched openings with corbel stops. Moulded and modillioned eaves cornice. Street front: single storey, 4 bays. Projecting end gabled bays each with three small round-headed sash windows as entrance front, beneath arcaded hoods with keystones and corbel stops. These bays are under simple gable pediments. The inner bays have two sets of casements in pairs. All windows have steeply weathered stone sills. INTERIOR: not inspected.
