Description

The lodge at East Morningside House, located at 7 Clinton Road in Edinburgh, dates from around 1874. It is a single-storey building with an irregular plan, featuring a modern addition. The exterior is constructed from bull-faced coursed sandstone with polished dressings, and it has overhanging timber eaves, bargeboards, and chamfered reveals.

On the east entrance elevation, the lodge has three bays. There is an open timber porch supported by two columns and corbels in the second bay, along with a pierced bargeboard and a two-leaf boarded door. The outer left bay features a single-storey, two-faced canted window that is advanced from the main structure, with a blank panel and hoodmoulding above it. The gable has a jerkin head topped with an iron thistle finial. The outer right bay contains a bipartite window.

The south elevation has been extended in a sympathetic style to the outer left, maintaining the three-bay layout. There are single windows in the outer right and left bays, with a blank hoodmoulded panel and a gablet above the centre bay. The advanced bay of the extension has windows at both the ground and attic levels, featuring a jerkin-headed gable.

The west elevation includes a gabled bay from the extension, with windows at both the ground and attic levels. The windows are plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a ridge stack, along with original rainwater goods, including hoppers and moulded eaves guttering.

The interior was not seen during the 1991 assessment.
