Avallon And Gatepiers, 2 Clinton Road, Edinburgh

Avallon and its gatepiers, located at 2 Clinton Road in Edinburgh, is a two-storey villa built in the Baronial style, likely designed by David Bryce and dated 1860. The building has a near rectangular plan and includes a service wing, carriage house, and lodge. It is constructed from squared and snecked pink sandstone with contrasting polished dressings. Architectural features include a base course, a string course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice, long and short quoins, crowstepped gables, chamfered reveals, and decorative Jacobean style pediments above the first-floor windows.

The entrance elevation features an advanced gabled entrance bay with rounded angles at the ground floor that corbel to a square at the first floor. Lion statues flank the steps leading up to the entrance, which has a roll-moulded doorway with a boarded door and decorative iron hinges. Above the doorway, there is a string course over a blank panel. A single window at the first floor has a Jacobean style colonnetted surround and pediment, and there is a small window set in the gablehead with a stone thistle finial. To the right of the entrance, there is a single window at the return angle, and additional single windows are present on both floors. The building features a fishscale conical roof topped with a cast-iron finial. The ground floor to the outer right is obscured by greenery, and there is also a small window set in the gablehead.
