Description

The Willaston War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921 by Ronald C Ashworth, with later additions and alterations. It is made of Storeton sandstone and bronze.

The memorial features a square pillar with angle buttresses, topped by an octagonal domed turret that has a bronze Latin cross. The pillar is set on a three-stepped square base. On the south face of the memorial, there is a bronze plaque that reads: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR KING & COUNTRY/ DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914-19/ THEIR NAMES SHALL LIVE FOR EVER/ (34 NAMES)/ IN SACRED MEMORY OF/ (9 NAMES)/ WHO FELL IN THE WAR/ 1939-1945."
