Description

Ashtree Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a dwelling, dating from the early 17th century, with a cross wing added in 1697 and later alterations. The building features a combination of rendered brick nogged timber-frame and stone dressed brickwork, topped with a slate roof and stone copings with kneelers, and has a stone stack.

The exterior of the earlier timber-framed section is single storey with an attic, consisting of two bays and a single bay wing at the rear. The added brick section is two storeys with an attic and one bay. The cross wing has a stone plinth and large framing made of lightweight timbers with small arch braces. The facade gives an apparent medieval appearance, although this is not confirmed by the interior. The windows are softwood flush leaded casements arranged in pairs, with a single attic window set within a gabled half dormer. The cross wing features flush stone quoins and projecting brick bands over the first and second floor window heads, with the second floor band displaying a dentil feature. There are two elliptical openings in the gable, surmounted by a square tablet inscribed with "I. W.E." and the date. The ground floor has a three-light ogee stone mullion window, while the first floor has a mullion and transom window, both with rectangular leaded glazing.

Inside the timber-framed section, there is an inglenook with a carved firebeam. The rear wing, which is single storey, contains two carved principal rafter trusses, along with exposed ceiling beams and joists. A cottage staircase is present, and in the cross wing, there are exposed beams and joists at both the first and second floor levels, along with exposed purlins.
