Description
Paradise Cottage West and Paradise Cottage East are a pair of houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from coursed ironstone rubble and red brick, featuring a pantiled roof with stone coped gables and kneelers, along with two ridge stacks. The brick front has been toothed into the ironstone gable at the left end. The buildings are three storeys high, with six bays on the ground floor and four bays on the first floor, and they have a brick dentillated eaves course.
On the ground floor, there is a central glazed 20th-century door with a three-pane overlight, flanked by a pair of glazing bar sash windows and another glazed door, which is covered by a 20th-century glazed porch. The first floor has four glazing bar sash windows, while the second floor features four smaller glazing bar sash windows. All openings have brick segmental heads.
Inside, there are two 19th-century cast iron ranges with plain surrounds and bracketed mantels, and upstairs, there are two bath grates. The floors are made of lime ash. The external stone walls at the rear and gables are three feet thick, with very large quoins and some chalk patching at a high level. There is a local tradition that the building was originally a tithe barn, but this seems unlikely given its narrowness, height, and the absence of large side openings at the rear.
