Description

Caistor House No 19 is a Grade II listed building located on the west side of Caistor Market Place. Originally built in the 17th century, it was refronted in the late 18th century. The structure is made of stuccoed brick and features a slate hipped roof with a single central stack. It has three stories and a five-bay front, standing on a platform with a plinth and a dentillated cornice.

The central entrance bay is highlighted by full-height Ionic pilasters and a pediment. Access is via three steps leading to a central six-panel door set in a semi-circular headed opening, which is adorned with a curvilinear traceried fanlight and panelled reveals. The doorcase has a crude decoration resembling reeding and a dentillated frieze. Above the door is a plain panel inscribed with the date '1682', although this date may not be reliable.

The doorway is sheltered by an open porch supported by a pair of round Ionic pillars, with two similar pillars in antis flanking the entrance. The full entablature above adds to the architectural detail. The flanking bays feature single glazing bar sash windows set in painted plain stone surrounds, each with plain cornices on dentils.

On the first floor, there is a central semicircular headed glazing bar sash window flanked by plain pilasters and a moulded hood mould. Above this window is a prominent lozenge shape, flanked by stone shields of arms. The central window is flanked by pairs of glazing bar sashes, also with painted stone surrounds and plain dentillated cornices, supported by stucco anthemion brackets.

The second floor features a central circular glazing bar fixed light with a moulded stone surround, flanked by two smaller glazing bar sashes with painted stone surrounds and anthemion brackets. The pediment is decorated with a lion's head.
