Description
No 20 Market Place is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century. It features a rendered brick exterior and a slate roof, with two brick stacks at the rear. The building is three storeys high and has a three-bay front. The central doorway is flanked by two extended bays of shop windows, which are topped by a cast iron balcony. There is a first-floor band and a second-floor fascia board with moulded eaves supported by widely spaced console brackets.
The entrance includes a nine-panelled door with a traceried overlight and moulded side panels, alongside large shop windows that have rusticated bases. Slim Doric angle pilasters with cornices and a moulded entablature frame the shop windows. On the first floor, there is a central eight-panelled door, originally glazed but now painted over, which is topped by a narrow cornice on consoles and flanked by single glazing bar sashes. The second floor has a central blank opening flanked by single similar openings that contain 20th-century casements.
