Description
Caistor School Library, originally built as a chapel in 1842, features yellow brick with ashlar dressings and red brick on the sides and rear. The building has a three-bay, two-storey front with a double plinth, angle pilasters, and a pair of pilasters on either side of the central doorway. It includes a ground floor sill band, a first floor band, and a pediment. The vertical elements have a pronounced entasis, giving an 'Egyptian' style appearance. There are three steps leading up to the central two-leaf door, which has six panels and is set in a plain surround with a moulded cornice. Above the door is a stone inscribed with the year 1842. The door is flanked by blank eared window surrounds that rest on the sill band. On the first floor, there is a central blank opening flanked by two 20th-century fixed lights that resemble glazing bar sashes. The three-bay sides are defined by angle and two mid-wall pilasters, with ground and first floor bands. The interior has been substantially altered in the 20th century.
