Description
Snowden's Hospital is a Grade II listed building located at No. 14 Scotgate, built in 1671. This structure serves as almshouses for eight poor women, originally founded in 1604 and rebuilt in 1823 by a pupil of the architect John Soane. The building is a single storey constructed in ashlar with a Welsh slate roof. The front facing the street features two mullioned two-light windows and a four-centred doorway, which has a six-panel door, all adorned with moulded dripmoulds. There is an inscription along the street frontage that reads: 'Snowden's Hospital, Rebuilt 1823, H P Westley, Mayor'. Behind the main building are eight cottages, which do not have any outstanding features. Nos 13 and 14 form a group.
