Description
Barn Hill House is a building with medieval origins that was rebuilt in the late 17th century and had a classic-style front added in the early to mid-19th century, marked by a rainwater head dated 1834. The structure is made of ashlar stone, featuring rusticated quoins, a moulded plinth, and a cornice with modillions, along with a band below it. It stands two storeys tall with an attic storey, displaying five windows with stone architraves and multiple keystones. The ground floor has two windows in stone surrounds, each with keystones and consoles, as well as balustrades below the cill level. The attic storey features a windowed pseudo parapet with ornamental panels at either end, adorned with swags and rams' head ornament, and a smaller cornice above. There are two stone stacks on the roof. A classic projecting porch in Roman Doric style, dating from around 1843, has four fluted columns and an entablature. The central entrance door is framed by a rusticated round-headed design with a mask on the keystone, and there are small niches on each side.
Inside, the house contains well-preserved panelled rooms, some featuring bolection mouldings and earlier details. Several rooms have bolection moulded fireplaces with original tiles. The staircase is from the 19th century and is not particularly notable. A terrace of three steps leads to the front door. Additionally, a barn in Scotsgate is included within the property’s curtilage; it is a minor 18th-century building, two storeys high, constructed of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof.
Barn Hill House, along with Nos 2 to 6, the wall and gatepiers, and the gazebo in the garden, form a cohesive group.
