Description
Truesdale's Hospital is an almshouse located at 13 Scotgate, established in 1700 for aged and poor men. The capacity was later increased to 16 when the building was rebuilt in 1832, as noted on the rainwater heads. The front of the hospital features an elaborate 19th-century 'Tudor' stone screen, consisting of one storey with two gables adorned with finials on either side of a larger central gable, all of which display heraldic shields. The building has a crenellated parapet and three groups of ornamental stone stacks. It includes 2-3-2 cusped light mullioned windows with continuous dripmoulds and a central 4-centred door. There are two gate piers with pyramidal capitals and inset scrapers, along with 19th-century cast iron railings. The courtyard contains two ranges of coursed rubble cottages, each featuring a gable with a heraldic shield above a 4-centred doorway with a dripmould. Each side has seven paired windows with stone surrounds and dripmoulds, and there is a plinth. The rainwater heads are dated 1833 and 1843. Nos 13 and 14 form a group.
