Description
The Poplars is a grade II listed building that dates back to the 18th century and was originally constructed as almshouses, now converted into a cottage. The structure is timber-framed, partially plastered, and primarily features tile-hung walls with a tiled roof. It consists of three bays aligned northwest to southeast, with a southwest aspect. There is an axial chimney stack located at the northwest end of the middle bay. Originally, the building comprised three separate dwellings, but it has since been combined into one, resulting in the removal of one chimney stack.
The building is single-storey with attics and includes three 20th-century casement windows, a plain boarded door with a shallow hood, and three gabled dormers featuring 20th-century casement windows. The roof is gambrel and gabled. The red clay tiles used on both the roof and the walls are arranged in horizontal bands of plain and scalloped tiles, with about one meter at the base of the walls left untiled and finished in white plaster. These tiles were produced at the Maryon-Wilson family's own works at Hart Farm in Great Canfield and are commonly found on many local buildings.
