Description
Water Hall is a late 16th century cottage that was extended in the 17th and 20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure with plastered and weatherboarded walls and a tiled roof. The original cottage consists of two bays aligned east to west, with a contemporary chimney stack at the west end. An additional bay was added to the west of the stack in the early 17th century. In the 20th century, several extensions were made to the south and east, including two extra chimneys. The building is single-storey with attics.
The north elevation is plastered with a weatherboarded dado and includes four 20th century casement windows, along with another window in a gabled dormer. A rustic porch from the 20th century projects at the west end, and there is a small 20th century brick extension and chimney at the east end. The roof has half-hips at both ends. Inside, there are jowled storey posts and cambered tiebeams. The wall framing is partly exposed, featuring curved tension braces that are trenched to the inside of the studs in the 16th century section, while the 17th century bay has heavy primary straight bracing. A stop-chamfered ceiling beam is present in the middle bay. The roof is of collar-rafter construction with ties suggesting it may have originally been thatched. A catslide dormer in the south pitch of the middle bay is likely original.
