Description
The Stag and Pheasant Public House is a mid-18th century building that features a front added to an earlier structure. It stands two storeys tall and is constructed of painted ashlar with a stone slate roof that has a small parapet. The building is adorned with a good moulded stone cornice and a painted plinth, while the sides are made of coursed rubble.
The façade includes five windows, with a lower two-storey wing on the left side that has one hipped dormer and one window. The main block's windows are double-hung sashes, with glazing bars on the first floor. The second-floor windows have stepped rusticated surrounds, while the first-floor windows feature rusticated stepped lintels and five-part keystones. The ground floor windows also have keystones and are set within a stepped rusticated surround that frames a recessed 19th-century door.
To the side, the extension is made of brick and includes one round-headed window on the first floor, which is a double-hung sash with glazing bars. A datestone from 1663 is incorporated into the new brick west gable.
The Stag and Pheasant Public House is part of a group that includes the Roman Catholic Church of St Augustine, the school, the wall and gate piers to the church, and Nos 14, 15, and Nos 17 to 22 in succession.
