Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Augustine was built in 1864 and designed by architect G. Goldie. It is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The front is gabled and topped with a finial that includes a mandorla of the Madonna and Child. The façade has two short bank arcades divided by columns with foliated capitals, flanking a large arched window that has a quatrefoil above lancets. An unusual bell-cote is asymmetrically placed, featuring a steep hipped roof with an iron ridge and finial. Piers support the bell above blank arcades, which are separated by half-columns with foliated capitals, while the upper part is made of ashlar. There is a porch on the left side of the church. Inside, there are short piers, some made of red granite. The church is listed as a feature of the street and is part of a group that includes the Roman Catholic Church of St Augustine, the school, the wall, and gate piers, along with Nos 14, 15, and Nos 17 to 22 (consecutive).
