Description

West Gate Park features a pair of gate piers from the early 19th century made of cast iron. These square, openwork piers have straight sides and are topped with a cornice that supports freestanding paterae. The sides are decorated with circular patterns in the Greek style. The piers still have bearers for gate hinges, although the gates were removed during World War II. This entrance served as the main access to the Thorold mansion house of Syston Park. The structure is included for its group value context.
