Description
Barkston House Hotel is a hotel that was originally a house, remodeled in the 17th century and further updated in the late 18th century, with additional features from the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and ashlar, topped with a slate roof that has stone-coped gables and chimney stacks.
The front of the hotel is two stories high and has five bays made of ashlar, with a coursed rubble plinth at the base. The central entrance features a 19th-century glazed door with a leaded porch designed in the Chinese style, supported by decorative ironwork from the same period. On either side of the door are two sash windows with glazing bars, flat lintels, and splayed keystones. The first floor windows are similar in style.
At the rear of the building, there is a 17th-century two-light window with ovolo-moulded mullions, and a second such window is incorporated into a 19th-century brick extension. Inside, the hotel retains late 18th-century shutters and doors.
