Description
Syston Old Hall is a small country house built in the 17th century, with significant alterations made in 1830. The structure features coursed ironstone and limestone rubble, accented with ashlar dressings and quoins. It has a hipped slate roof with lead dressings and two moulded stone ridge stacks. The building is designed in an L-shape and has a two-storey, irregular six-bay south front, which includes a first-floor stone band.
The south front has two advanced bays topped with a pediment that contains a date stone from 1830, surmounted by a cross fleury. An off-centre doorway to the right is covered by an ashlar porch with a four-centred arch, featuring a Gothick glazed door and sidelights. There are six irregularly positioned glazing bar sashes with flat lintels and slightly emphasised keyblocks.
On the east front, there is a copy of an elaborate late 16th-century porch, likely dating from 1830, similar to that at Harlaxton Manor. Above this porch are the arms of the de Ligne family in a strapwork cartouche, although the inner moulded door arch appears to be from the 17th century. The west end features a 19th-century ashlar bay window with three plain sashes.
