Description

The Firs is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and has a 20th-century concrete tiled roof with one stone-coped gable, as well as brick gable and ridge stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan, with an 18th-century wing that has a gable facing the street. The original 17th-century wing is two storeys high and has a four-bay front. There is a 19th-century six-panelled door with a contemporary wooden porch, flanked by single 19th-century three-light casement windows. On the first floor, there are two 18th-century glazing bar sashes. The 18th-century wing is also two storeys with garrets, featuring one 2-light 19th-century casement window in the gable end and two small square shuttered openings in the eaves. Inside this block, the original studded partitions of the servants' quarters can be found. The building is included for its group value only.
